Fred Spurlin, and family, moved to The Canal Zone in 1974. From day one he was hooked on the Code of The Canal Zone, "Always Be Helping Someone". With that ethic and his talent in photography and story telling the task of photographing as many memories possible. Preserving the memories of the Red, White and Blue Utopia was his passion.

Driving and inspiration is a big part of photographing a country. Michael "Robby" Robinson provided both for many years and we thank you.
Part of Fred's job was liaison to Panama. During those years his work brought him to the highest ranks of Panama. One day Dave Speir, CZ Schools Superintendent, called Fred's office to let him know that Panamanian President Jimmy Lakas was at reception to visit with him. Having been friends with Pres. Lakas for years, Fred was ready to receive the Presidential visit on surprise. Fred had arranged for thousands of CZ surplus school desk to be delivered to Pres. Lakas's home province of Colon. Pres. Lakas brought Fred an official gift of a 1 gallon bottle of Johnny Walker of which he claimed he had bought at the legal gift price of $24.99. Trhe desk where sold by Canal Zone Schools at 5ȼ each. President Lakas paid for all 20,000 desk personally.
